Hello, I’m Maria, the founder of Marea, a mum of two little ones, and someone who has always loved art, crafts, and creating beautiful things.
When my children were young, I dreamed of finding a way to work that allowed me to be present with my family while still nurturing my creativity. That dream became Marea, a blend of artistry, purpose, and everyday luxury.
The name Marea is close to my heart. In Latin and Spanish it means “sea” or “ocean,” and in Italian and Spanish it also means “tide.” Living by the beach, I have always felt deeply connected to the ocean’s rhythm and calm. That sense of flow and beauty inspires every piece I make.
Each scrunchie is handcrafted with love here in Christchurch. I carefully source premium deadstock fabrics from around the world, giving new life to luxury materials that would otherwise go unused. With every stitch I aim for perfection so each scrunchie feels like a little piece of everyday luxury.
Marea began with scrunchies made from swimwear and activewear fabrics, chosen for their durability, quality, and beauty. At its heart though, Marea is about more than hair accessories. It is about creating thoughtful, stylish pieces that last. Small luxuries designed to bring beauty and joy into everyday life.
